With our shift to start-to-finish wool processing here in our barn, we are now able to put more energy into providing the raw materials for the fibers arts -- yarns, roving, batts, yarns and needle felting materials. The yarns include a range of natural colors, along with a selection of natural vegetable-dyed fibers blended with our natural grays and browns to varying degrees for a range of heathers. Thirteen Mile yarns are spun on the semi-worsted system; this means that the fibers are pin-drafted after carding and before spinning, yielding lustrous, strong yarns that are less prone to pilling than yarns spun on the woolen system. Thirteen Mile yarns are made with our organic wool, certified by the Montana Department of Agriculture.
Our Queen-size and throw blankets are a blend of natural colored and white wool in a herringbone weave, with a few natural white bands, and whip-stitched edges. We are out of stock in the King and twin sizes in this style, but we currently have a new batch of blankets, which will include Kings and Twins. These are darker brown heather.
All products come with tags explaining where the wool comes from, and a small, permanent interior label with the Predator Friendly logo (certifying that no wild predators are killed on our grazing lands). Almost all our items are now made with our Thirteen Mile yarns spun here on the ranch---softer and more lustrous than our previous yarns. A few of the original hats are still available, noted and priced accordingly. Please note that we cannot keep a substantial inventory of our knitted goods on hand. Check on availability and production time when you order.
Some of our hats and sweaters are trimmed with a wooden buttons made from old juniper wood fenceposts scavenged on our homestead and other Montana ranches. Although the posts are probably at least a hundred years old and rotted where they enter the ground, the heartwood core remains solid and deep reddish brown.
Our fleeces include a range of white, gray, brown and black fleeces in the Thirteen Mile flock, including Border Leicester, Corriedale, Romeldale crosses, and a few with Blue-faced Leicester and Wensleydale genetics.
Thirteen Mile rugs are made from blends of our coarsest wool fibers, along with occasional mixtures of other suitable rug wools (Karakul, Scottish Blackface, Lincoln) from other Montana sheep producers, and even bison fiber in selected rugs. We mix the colors (natural and plant-dyed) right on the carder, yielding unique and gradual color shifts. The rugs are crocheted and then felted, so they're tough and durable; they're meant to be used as rugs! Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org if you'd like to discuss custom rugs.
